Accepting New Clients!

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for. — Georgia O’Keeffe

By centering image-making and the creative process in her therapy practice, Em believes art is a gateway of knowing and a bridge between our inner and outer worlds. As you set the pace, Em will walk with you on your journey, guiding you to creatively give form and shape to your inner experiences, helping you to listen to and understand the mysteries and messages within your images, and supporting you to hold compassionate space for yourself when you are experiencing difficult emotions.

Em’s extensive background in creative art techniques and various levels of mental healthcare unites art-making and verbal processing to practice shifting overthinking to awareness, opening to emotions, building tolerance from distress, and restoring core values and meaningful connections with yourself and your world.

Informed by existential therapy, art therapy theories, and trauma-informed neuroscience research, Em’s approach helps hone lived experiences into inner wisdom and resilience. Client-artists are invited to actively engage in the creative struggle of expressing and exploring, confronting and challenging, nurturing and tending, failing, learning, and growing. Arts-based therapy can be especially helpful for individuals who feel stuck, overwhelmed, perfectionistic, or caught in cycles of overthinking or avoidance.

Em finds meaning in supporting adults and young adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and the prolonged impacts of trauma and grief. Em has had success helping people who struggle with feelings of emptiness and loss of meaning, dissociation and dysregulation, perfectionism and strong inner-criticism, low self-esteem, and overcontrolled coping tendencies. Em’s person-centered approach and collaborative style may not be a good fit for people seeking highly structured and manualized therapy.

Em's Experience & Background

Uniting art-making and verbal processing, Em helps clients discover inner-wisdom and resiliance. Em sees clients in Towson, Maryland.

Em is a licensed and board certified art psychotherapist practicing in the Baltimore area. A Baltimore native and passionate artist, Em has been an active member of the city’s creative community since childhood, exhibiting her own artwork through exhibitions at The Baltimore Museum of Art and MICA and working to uplift the voices of Baltimore artists through non-profit work.

Em earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts from The Maryland Institute College of Art, majoring in painting with concentrations in film/video, creative writing, and illustration, and earned her Master of Arts in Art Therapy from Notre Dame of Maryland University where her thesis focused on integrating existential therapy, neuroscience, and art psychotherapy for survivors of trauma.

Em’s professional background includes experiences at various levels of care with diverse populations, including a trauma-focused hospitalization program for active duty military service members, an agency for survivors of sexual violence and human trafficking, residential treatment for people with complex mental health needs, and virtual therapy groups for cancer patients and survivors. Outside of the art therapy studio, Em enjoys hiking in nature with her dogs, running and exercising, painting, and watching scary movies.

Em brings her belief in the creative process, her passion for helping others, and her extensive background in art to her therapy practice, showing up as a human being in the therapy space and walking with clients along their journey toward healing. Em believes in art as a way of knowing; she is invested in the healing and transformative power of creative action for self-understanding, wellness, and improved engagement with life.
