The mind-body connection is an effective, essential, and powerful way to reconnect with your sense of self and goals. Many therapy practices assert the importance of the mind-body relationship because our thoughts, feelings, and emotions impact the way our body physically feels and operates. But what happens when we process our thoughts and reclaim our body, but still feel disconnected. What else is missing?
Holistic mental health practices incorporate a third element into the mix: spirituality. Holistic counseling aims at helping people heal by taking into consideration the entire person, which encompasses psychological, experiential, and spiritual contexts. Spirituality does not always pertain to organized religion, prayer, or meditation, though for some people, that is how it is practiced. In counseling, spirituality is a broad concept and makes room for a multitude of perspectives. The spiritual context in counseling provides a sense of connection to something greater than ourselves and universal human experience of searching for meaning and purpose for life.
Nurturing Your Spiritual Self
All too often, people float through life on autopilot, managing the day to day tasks, caring for others, or completing never-ending to do lists. Spiritual practices, like prayer, meditation, breathing exercises, or rituals, pause the autopilot and help us move through life with more intention. Nurturing our spiritual selves allows us to give our attention to what matters rather than what demands it all the time. We believe it’s possible to live in a more fully connected way by honoring the mind and body and also the spirit.
Spirituality has been linked to many positive and important aspects of human functioning: forging and maintaining positive relationships, high self-esteem, cognitive flexibility, and optimism.
