Brainspotting Therapy

Do you feel trapped in a memory? Unable to shake a painful interaction from the past?

Are you avoiding certain places, people, or events to bypass hurt & pain?

Brainspotting (BSP) is a therapeutic technique that allows us to access stored emotions & memories more quickly and efficiently than through talk therapy alone.

BSP began as a variation on Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR.) Developed by David Grand, BSP was originally used as an intervention for symptoms of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder. Now, it is recognized as an evidence-based practice for a wide range of psychological symptoms.

The information we have about how the brain stores our experiences in growing by the day. BSP uses the optic nerve to tap into our inner brain- the part of our brain that facilitates memory, consciousness, emotion and communication with our nervous system.

By helping clients access a place in their field of vision where they notice their feelings and sensations most strongly. This brainspot is where the optic nerve connects to where an experience is stored in our inner brain. Once the connection is made and attention is sustained on the brainspot, the experience is able to flow out of the inner brain and to be processed more effectively through the body and conscious mind.

Brainspotting Therapy

Combining Mindfulness & Neuroscience

B'well counseling is one of the few counseling centers in Maryland to offer BSP therapy. B'well 's Brainspotting therapists Katie and Caitlin enjoy connecting their clients with this way of healing as it combines two of their deep interests: mindfulness & neuroscience.
Katie is also a member of the Baltimore Brainspotting Collective.

B'Well's Promise

While Brainspotting, a person follows the memories, feelings, physical sensations, images, and even music that may become conscious as they focus on their brainspot. B'well Brainspotting therapists attune to the client's physical state throughout the process and to follow where they lead.

In this way, Brainspotting is primarily a client-led modality where the therapist helps create a safe holding space for experience and exploration.
